Responsibilities of the position includes, but not limited to:

  • Work as a member of a survey crew performing boundary, topography, and hydrography surveys for clients.
  • Set-up and operate survey equipment, including total-station, data-collector, level, and GPS

SUMMARY

This position organizes and coordinates the work of a survey party to perform water and sewer route surveys, construction surveys, boundary surveys, and control surveys.  Work involves establishing preliminary location information; performing as-built surveys; collecting GIS data, using survey equipment; determining sewer and water routes; researching deeds, right of ways and easements; generating field topography; locating utilities; and using AutoCAD to show data gathered in the field for engineers to design new sewer and water lines.  This position serves as a vital member of the Survey Section and work closely with other Divisions of the Charlotte Water Engineering Division.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organizes and coordinates the work of a survey party to perform water and sewer route surveys, construction surveys, boundary surveys, and control surveys.
  • Plans survey.
  • Establishes preliminary alignments, locations, and elevations for the design of water and sewer facilities.
  • Performs as-built and GIS data collection utilizing survey grade GPS.
  • Conducts utility or route surveys using electronic total stations, electronic data collectors, and GPS systems. 
  • Ensures that field survey data is collected according to the standards set by North Carolina Board Rules
  • Collects data; downloads data; checks data for anything out of place; and corrects inaccuracies.
  •  Ensures safety during field work surveys.
  • Coordinates field surveys for civil engineers and project managers.
  • Assists survey consultants with daily field activities.
  • Serves as a vital member of the section and works closely with other divisions of the CLT Water Engineering Division.
  • Depending on assigned area, supervises and coordinates work activities of assigned staff; assigns work, monitors status of work, and inspects completed work; participates and provides input in staffing decisions relative to hiring, firing, discipline, and promotional opportunities; evaluates performance; mentors staff; and aids with career development.
  • Operates survey equipment.
  • Researches deeds; identifies right of ways and easements. 
  • Determines the best possible route, 
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of Trimble software and systems.
  • Knowledge of geometry and trigonometry.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of land surveying and mathematics as applied to surveying

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium work and requires applying 30 pounds of force frequently and exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects. Bachelor's Degree in the Engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or and equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
 
Other Required Qualifications
  • Expert-level knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry, and in particular trigonometry, as applied to field surveying and office computations.
  • Working knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices as it applies to hydrology, street design, parking lots, methods of construction, and utility installation. An understanding of factors affecting site development is necessary.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Ability to layout alignments, both horizontally and vertically, which provide guidance for construction documents.
  • Ability to perform complete land surveys and direct the work of subordinate employees.

Accuracy expectations are high. Surveys are often legal documents and must be error-free. Surveying staking done for construction work must be precise to ensure that the likelihood of costly errors made by those relying on the surveyor's measurements is minimized. The location of utilities must be closely determined to ensure the safety of those working around them.

  • Knowledge of the following guidelines: Chapter 89C, Chapter 47-30, Chapter 87-115 through 87-130 of the NC General Statutes, NC State University Design and Construction Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of robotic total station, survey-grade GNSS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, electromagnetic utility locating equipment, desktop and laptop computers, metal/magnetic locater, stakes, iron pins, prism pole, camera, flagging, spray paint, engineer and architectural scales, and measuring tape.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Continuing education to maintain licensure and stay current with the latest developments and technology utilized by the profession.

Qualifications: 

  • Licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor preferred. 
  • 5 or more years of progressive experience in surveying management in residential/commercial development preferred. 
  • Strong self-motivational and organizational skills
  • Experience with survey computations and platting using Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and ArcGIS, as well as field experience with Trimble Survey field equipment.
  • Computer skills involve survey data management using Trimble or Android devices.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Google Earth and IT a plus. 
  • Thorough working knowledge of GPS required. 
  • Must pass a drug screen, background check, and have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the company's driving (MVR) policy.

Job Summary

CESI is seeking a Surveying Technician for its Concord and Statesville, NC offices. The job would consist of producing drawings from surveyed field data utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Part-Time Instructor / Geomatics Program

Primary Purpose of Position      
The Department of Built Environment is accepting applications for two Part-Time Instructors for the Geomatic Program. Part-Time Instructors are hired on a semester-by-semester basis to teach courses in Geomatics/Land Surveying delivered by the Built Environment Department’s Geomatics program. The Department is currently looking for two candidates to teach a two course sequence in 1) Automated Surveying and Mapping (Fall) and Residential Subdivision Design (Spring); 2) Satellite Positioning (Fall) and Geodesy (Spring). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: teaching online courses, willingness to participant in Learning Management Systems training, participating in data collection and assessment of student learning for ABET, and submitting teaching materials as part of semester review. Candidates will work closely with the Geomatics Coordinator for assessments as well as faculty with subject matter expertise.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Built Environment supports over 175 undergraduate majors in the programs of Construction Management, Environmental Health and Safety and, Geomatics. The courses taught in the Geomatics program area are at the undergraduate level and include Automated Surveying and Mapping, Residential Subdivision Design, Geodesy and Satellite Positioning.

Minimum Requirements
Candidates must have a Master’s degree in Geomatics or related discipline at time of application with five years’ experience in the profession of land surveying or related field. Sequence 1 requires experience in using AutoCAD Civil 3D for residential design and experience in designing subdivisions. Sequence 2 requires experience in using GNSS equipment and basic geodetic techniques.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education 
Candidates with Master’s Degree and 5 years professional experience and with background in Geomatics or related discipline. Professional licensure is preferred.
