This course will be held in person and via the Zoom platform. A camera is required to attend via Zoom. We will assume you are choosing to attend in person when you register unless you notify us of your intentions to attend via Zoom. The Certified Floodplain Surveyor Update will be a refresher course that is a condensed version of the full CFS training. We will discuss any processing changes and/or regulatory changes that might have occurred since the first training session.

The CFS Update is required every 2 years for Certified Floodplain Surveyors to maintain their certification.*

No lunch will be provided. Drinks and snacks will be available.

*Renewal Policy: Certified Floodplain Surveyors (CFS) are required to complete a 4-hour biennial update course within two years of the initial certification date and every two years after that. If the certification expiration date passes prior to completion of the update course requirement, the CFS must attend the next available class. The grace period cannot extend more than one year from the expiration date. If the CFS fails to meet this requirement, their certification will be revoked, and they will need to attend the full course and pass the exam to be reinstated.

Instructors

Gary W. Thompson, PLS - Gary Thompson is the Deputy Risk Management Chief, North Carolina Emergency Management/Risk Management and Chief of the North Carolina Geodetic Survey/Risk Management/NC Emergency Management. He has held a professional license as a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) in North Carolina since 1980.  He has served as president of both the North Carolina Society of Surveyors (NCSS) and the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS).  Gary is an emeritus member of the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCBEES), and a commission member of the ABET Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission.

Steve Garrett, CFM, State NFIP Coordinator (NCEM) -Steve Garrett serves as the State NFIP Coordinator. He has worked for North Carolina Emergency Management for over 20 years, serving many roles including LOMR Review Partners Program Manager, NCFMP-NCDOT MOA Coordination Lead, Floodplain Mapping Program Outreach Planner, Environmental Specialist, and Hazard Mitigation Grant Project Manager. Steve earned a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources and a Master of Science in Natural Resources Management from North Carolina State University.
