Topics: 

• 8:00am-12:00pm - "NC/SC State Line Boundary" by Jim Davis, PLS

This seminar will cover a history of the State Line between North Carolina and South Carolina, a description of the various phases of the retracement survey, and a presentation of the re-established state line. The project was led by the NC Geodetic Survey, the SC Geodetic Survey and several private surveying companies. The results of the survey were accepted by the NC and SC State Line Boundary Commission and legislation was passed in both states that implemented the results.

•  1:00pm-4:30pm - "History of the English System" by Tim Guisewhite, PLS

This course will explore early developments in the English system of land surveying. We’ll look at the units that were born out of everyday living and the changing English culture that created greater demand for surveying. We’ll also look at early equipment and mathematics that were born out of science and necessity. Finally, we will look at the impact English land surveying had on the colonial scene of America and why it has lasted for all these years!

Instructor: 

Jim Davis, PLS - Jim Davis was the project manager for CESI, one of the firms responsible for the survey to re-establish the state line between North Carolina and South Carolina. The multi-year state line project was completed in 2013 and was a collaborative effort between the North Carolina Geodetic Survey, the South Carolina Geodetic Survey, and several private surveying firms. Mr. Davis is currently employed by Trans Ash, Inc. and is responsible for managing the company’s surveying projects in North Carolina. Mr. Davis received a Bachelor of Science in Surveying from Ohio State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from UNC Charlotte.  Mr. Davis has been a Professional Land Surveyor licensed in North Carolina since 1995 and is currently the chairman of the NCSS Standards of Practice Committee. He has previously served as president of the NCSS Education Foundation, president of the Yadkin Valley Chapter, and chairman of the NCSS Education Committee.

Tim Guisewhite, PLS - Timothy is the owner of Guisewhite Professional Land Surveying, PC, in Lincoln County, North Carolina. His passion lies in historical surveying methods and equipment and how to communicate the application of this knowledge to the next generation of surveyors. Over the years, Tim has had the privilege to perform surveys in nine of the original thirteen colonial states. He is licensed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. He is currently serving as President of the North Carolina Society of Surveyors. Tim is a member of the North Carolina Society of Surveyors, the National Society of Professional Surveyors, the Surveyors Historical Society & the Sons of the American Revolution.
