What you'll be challenged to do:

 Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for maintaining adequate backlog for Charlotte based survey operations.

We are seeking a crew chief for our projects in the Raleigh, North Carolina area. The Survey Crew Chief will manage field aspects of projects and work closely in collaboration with the team.

Responsibilities

  • Perform construction layout such as for setting lines, the layout of concrete formwork, pile layout, earthwork cut and fill layout, and as-building for the project

Develop a robust outreach (Extension) program aimed at recruiting and training surveying/mapping technicians and professionals. Efforts will focus on those who are not currently in the industry, but express interest in surveying and mapping careers, as well as those who are currently employed in the industry but wish to advance in their field. Work with state of Florida colleges and UF academic advisers and recruiters to introduce prospective students to surveying and mapping as a means to build additional workforce capacity for the profession in Florida.

Oversee programming and educational development for high school students to learn about career opportunities in surveying and mapping, as well as prepare them for entry-level field work in surveying and mapping.

Work closely with the professional surveying community to reach relevant audiences and create training opportunities to expand the workforce available to surveying businesses. Explore certification opportunities to provide participants with credentials that ensure basic levels of competence and familiarity with surveying and mapping practice.

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and four years of relevant experience.

A master’s or higher degree plus 10 years of relevant demonstrated experience in the field of surveying, mapping, and/or geospatial analysis or a doctorate. The Department of Public Works builds, maintains and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk's citizens, businesses and visitors, including the City's Street Network, Traffic Management System, Storm Water System, Waste Management and Recycling Systems

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinates and manages land survey field office projects
  • Gathers and prepares documents and information necessary for accurate land boundary and topographic surveys and assists field crews as needed.

  • Performs area and boundary calculations for parcels

The Survey Instrument Operator is responsible for maintaining the field notes being kept daily and transcribing this information into the final field book. As the second in authority on the Survey Crew, this position is also required to perform all the duties of the Crew Chief in their absence.

Preferred Qualification:
The ideal candidate should have the following:   

  • Experience with field calculators, computers, and Microsoft Office Suite.
    Proficient in establishing traverse, route and angle point locations and computing.
  • Proficient in traverse surveying. 
  • Ability to produce neat and legible field sketches in a survey book.
  • Experience with proper use, routine maintenance, and periodic adjustment of all assigned survey and safety equipment.

Notes:
1. Applicants may substitute education in a civil engineering curriculum at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience, up to a maximum of three years.
2. Applicants who possess an associate's degree in either Engineering, Construction Management or Surveying or Surveying Technology from an accredited community college, college or university are considered to have met two years of the five-year experience requirement.

Assistant Division Chief, Land Surveyor - Baltimore, Maryland

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration's (MDOT SHA) Office of Highway Development (OHD), Plats and Survey's Division (Baltimore City) is recruiting for an Assistant Division Chief, Land Surveyor (Transportation Engineering Manager II) position. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this MDOT SHA position or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.

The Assistant Division Chief (ADC) is responsible for managing the overall operations of the Plats and Surveys Division (PSD). The incumbent will require extensive knowledge of the principals and practices of land surveying and their direct application in support of MDOT SHA transportation projects.  This position functions with a high degree of independence and reports directly to the PSD Division Chief. 

This position is responsible for managing field crews, area engineers, and team leaders in the activities necessary to collect and process field data, research, and analyze cadastral data, and prepare plats suitable for acquisition under the COMAR Real Property article 3-108.  The land survey information that is collected and analyzed by PSD and/or consultants is processed and provided to MDOT SHA’s design production managers and consultant engineers for their use in the development of design studies, plans, and other documents for transportation projects.  The ADC is also responsible for training and development of all PSD staff as well as succession planning for the division.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.

EXPERIENCE: Eight (8) years of experience in professional engineering, including one (1) year of supervisory or consultant management experience. 

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS:  Four (4) years of experience in plat preparation or land surveying, management of a plat preparation team and/or land surveying production team.

  • Knowledge of current survey tools, software, CADD, GPS, and GIS.

NOTES:

1. Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.

2.  Possession of a master's degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the non-supervisory experience.

3. Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the state of Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.

Professional Surveyor/Project Manager (PLS) - Cary, NC

As one of the leaders in the department, the Professional Surveyor (PLS) will be responsible for fostering and growing client relationships and developing and monitoring project scope, budget, schedule, and quality control for survey projects from the proposal stage through final deliverables.

This person will be charged with providing oversight of survey activities to ensure assignments meet performance goals, effectively coordinating and communicating with other project team members, and providing detailed instruction to survey support personnel.  Experience with private development and municipal projects desirable. NCDOT and transportation project experience a plus. 

Primary responsibilities include (but not limited to) the following:

  • Compiling and researching projects as needed prior to starting work.
  • Analyzing deeds and researching materials for the production of the survey.
  • Assuring that all projects stay on schedule and within budget and discussing any issues/discrepancies with Supervisor if needed.
  • Coordinating with the field crew supervisor your project needs and working with field staff to assure the desired product from the field.
  • Prioritizing projects and their schedules for yourself and staff.
  • Coordinating QA/QC scheduling.
  • Monitoring each project to ensure that client is satisfied with service and product and that all aspects of the scope have been performed fully and correctly.

 Requirements for the position:

  • 5+ years’ experience in surveying and project management
  • Licensed Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) in the State of North Carolina.
  • Experience with MicroStation and GEOPAK including NCDOT or equivalent transportation surveying project management experience and familiarity with NCDOT Location & Surveys processes and standards. Subsurface Utility 
  • Engineering experience a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with approved/acceptable driving history required.
