Senior Survey Technician - Fayetteville, NC

The City of Fayetteville is seeking a Senior Survey Technician to perform a variety of technical field engineering and survey work in support of engineering design activities including calculating mathematical and logarithmic equations and field survey collection.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: 

  1. Set-up and operate a full range of electronic survey and data collection equipment including survey levels, chains and tapes, iron and pin finders, theodolites, metal detectors, calculators, prism poles and other types of measuring instruments; drive stakes, hubs and iron for survey purposes; mark grades for utilities construction; clean, track and maintain survey supplies and instruments such as stakes and marking equipment.
  2. Prepare and participate in a variety of topographic survey projects; collect and provide the necessary survey information for engineers and draftsmen including records and logs.
  3. Assist with elevations and definitions of control points, curve data, angles, boundaries, cross sections and areas.
  4. Participate in surveying activities including locating field evidence for determining existing property and utility lines and rights-of-way; take detailed field notes and make neat sketches of surveyed property.
  5. Assist in clearing the area or site where survey activities are scheduled including cutting brush and moving man-hole covers; direct traffic as necessary during survey activities.
  6. Answer questions and provide information to the public concerning engineering and surveying activities.
  7. Participate in a variety of survey activities requiring travel from site to site, including remote sites.
  8. Compile, calculate, review and input survey data for the state geodetic system; transfer instrument data to computer system.

Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: 

Experience: Two years of experience in technical field survey work.

Training: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Licensing & Certification:

Required: Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license and ability to maintain insurability.

Position Title: Engineering Technician I

Salary: Grade 27 - $40,723.22 - $69,229.48

Description of Duties: 
Performs skilled computer-aided mapping and surveying and performs record keeping as it relates to municipal engineering; does related work as required. Produces and maintains municipal maps and records. Assists the City Surveyor in performing various surveys such as property, topographic, and construction surveys. Reviews subdivision plats, street construction plans, and building permits for compliance with specific municipal ordinances. Department work is directed by the city engineer. 

Responsibilities:
Maintains computer and hardcopy maps and lists relating to water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, floodplain, city limits, street lights, cemetery, zoning, easements, and others; assists in surveying by running instruments, taking field notes, computing closure, pulling chain, holding rod, driving stakes; operates GPS equipment, total station, data collector, automatic level, plotter, distance measuring instrument; makes lettering and graphic illustrations of signs, charts, graphs, and diagrams; locates city cemetery plots; orders department office supplies; provides information and responds to requests from public and private agencies including other city departments and the general public.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities: 
Extensive knowledge of computer-aided mapping, land surveying, and related software and equipment; knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and Topcon equipment and software preferred. 

Physical Requirements: 
Work in this class is medium and requires good physical endurance.  Physical activity will include but is not limited to stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, and speaking normally.  The employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold; traffic and construction site hazards; and may be exposed to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system such as fumes and dust.  The employee must have the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, read a computer terminal, and use fine measurement devices.

Desirable Education and Experience: 
Graduation from high school; any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate degree in surveying, engineering, or drafting; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  

Special Requirements: 
North Carolina Driver License.  Must possess certification as a Surveyor Intern (SI) or be eligible to sit for and obtain such certification from the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors within six month probationary period.
