NCDOT’s Location and Surveys Unit, part of the Technical Services Division, is looking for energetic, dedicated, goal-oriented individuals to join our team and help to deliver transportation projects to the citizens of North Carolina.  Location and Surveys has 14 offices located throughout the state of North Carolina ranging from the mountains to the coast, including Raleigh (#5 on Forbes list of best places to raise a family), Charlotte, Greensboro and Wilmington as well as several rural areas throughout the state.

Location and Surveys has several positions in the engineering surveying field. The State of North Carolina classifies all positions as either engineers/engineering supervisors or engineering technicians/specialists, however we are seeking candidates with either surveying or engineering backgrounds.  The Location and Surveys Unit has a high number of PE’s and PLS’s and several with dual registration.  This is a great opportunity to work with registered professionals to further your career and pursue your own professional registration.

GIS Technician - Fayetteville, NC

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
This class is responsible for writing and coding programs for the Geographic Information System (GIS) and providing end-user GIS system support within a designated division of the Public Works Commission in accordance with enterprise standards, techniques and methodologies established by the GIS coordinator. (A) Graduation from an accredited four (4) year university/college with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in designing and/or modifying GIS systems; OR (B) Graduation from an accredited two (2) year community/technical college with a degree/certification in Computer Science, or related field and a minimum of five (5) years of experience as defined in (A) above; OR (C) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and a minimum of nine (9) years of experience as defined in (A) and (B) above; OR (D) An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as defined in (A), (B), and (C) above.

North Raleigh firm has an opportunity for a Survey Field Technician to join its surveying department.  Survey Field Technician will report to surveying director and is responsible for executing various types of surveys, including, but not limited to, ALTA, boundary, topographic, and as-built.

We are seeking individuals to perform journey level survey work involved in performing preliminary as-builts, control, topography, boundary, NCDOT location and ALTA surveys for projects.

  • Performs construction stakeout and associated preliminary topographic survey, boundary, ALTA and construction surveys for public and private clients

  • Perform stakeout calculations for construction and roadway projects

Requirements:

  • Associates degree preferred with 1+ years of experience, but would consider someone with a high school diploma/DED with 3+ years of experience
  • Proficient in Microstation, and AutoCad Civil 3D
  • Ability to compute, process and map field data
  • Experience with Trimble Business Center/ Spectra Office and good understanding of GPS techniques a plus
  • Understanding of surveying laws and state standards for boundary analysis and computations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office and Google Earth

This position reports to the Survey Manager, his delegates, and is responsible for operation of various types of survey equipment for field survey efforts. Hours will vary dependent upon workloads and project needs. This position based from our Kennesaw location, but extensive and long term southeastern regional travel will be required. 

The successful candidate will be able to perform assigned tasks with minimal oversight as well as interacting with clients in a professional and courteous manner. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:  3 to 5 years

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:  Two-year Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology or AutoCAD drafting.  3-5 years’ land development work, water and sewer experience preferred, entry level considered.  

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience with AutoCAD, CAD standards and Excel. 

Duties include, but are not limited to:  Development of master plan/infrastructure schematic and detailed technical drawings from sketches.  To assist with the design of water and sewer mains, mass grading, roadway vertical design, erosion control, permit submittals and storm drainage.  Plan/Profile drawings and utility conflict resolution.  Plan production is a critical role of this position. Assist with the creation of utility enabling packages in conjunction with mechanical utilities.  Candidates should be prepared to provide work samples.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • NC Professional Land Surveyors License required.
  • Four-year bachelor's degree or two-year associate's degree in survey related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ project management experience, preferably 5 years with mentoring and training experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge in land surveying as well as field experience with surveying subdivisions, commercial properties, institutional and industrial projects.
  • Experience in construction related survey computations and staking plans – such as erosion control, utility, grading and storm drainage and building layout.
  • Experience preparing topo survey, boundary, and ALTA/ACSM survey maps as well as Plats, easement exhibits, researching records, writing legal descriptions and investigating property history; developing scope and fee proposals and managing projects.
  • Must have solid working knowledge of AutoCAD, Carlson, GIS mapping and MS Office Suite
  • MicroStation and NCDOT experience preferred

Responsibilities:

  • Coordination of field crews including preparation of field packages.

Qualifications:
  • Five (5) or more years’ experience as a Crew Chief in construction staking and/or surveying preferred
  • Knowledge of TDS Software, Trimble Robotics, GPS equipment
  • CAD experience preferred
  • Must have a valid NC driver’s license
  Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Must be able to manage and mentor field personnel to ensure that project objectives are met under budget and in a timely manner
