The City of Fayetteville is seeking a Senior Survey Technician to perform a variety of technical field engineering and survey work in support of engineering design activities including calculating mathematical and logarithmic equations and field survey collection.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Set-up and operate a full range of electronic survey and data collection equipm­ent including survey levels, chains and tapes, iron and pin find­ers, theodolites, metal detectors, calculators, prism poles and other types of measuring instru­ments; drive stakes, hubs and iron for survey purposes; mark grades for utilities construction; clean, track and maintain survey supplies and instruments such as stakes and marking equipment.
  2. Prepare and participate in a variety of topograph­ic survey projects; collect and provide the neces­sary survey information for engineers and drafts­men including records and logs.

  • Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college/university with a degree/certification in Geomatics/Engineering Technology or a related field and a minimum of one (1) year experience as a member of a survey team, which includes demonstrated experience in the use of survey equipment/instruments; OR 
  • Graduation from an accredited two (2) year community/technical college with a degree/certification in surveying/engineering technology or a related field and a minimum of five (5) years experience as a member of a survey team, which includes demonstrated experience in the use of survey equipment/instruments; OR 
  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma  and a minimum of nine (9) years experience as defined in (A) or (B) above; OR

Reports to: SUE Field Manager 

The ideal candidate will have a general understanding of Sub-Surface Utility Engineering (SUE) and Electromagnetic (EM) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment.  Experience with EM and GPR, would be preferred.  Candidates should have a minimum of an Associate’s degree.

Geomatics Survey Technician III Job Description - Cary, NC

Definition:
Under direction, coordinates the activities of a field survey party; performs the most technically complex paraprofessional field surveying duties; and performs other duties as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
Responsible for the effective performance, training, and safety of all members of a field survey party. Geomatics Survey Technician III reports to a Geomatics Service area leader either Residential/Commercial, Construction Services, Remote Sensing, S.U.E., or G.I.S.  That leader is assigned responsible charge for field survey work.

Geomatics Survey Technician III possesses a general knowledge of land surveying principles and practices. Including a thorough knowledge of field surveying practices.  Geomatics Survey Technician III need only to possess a working knowledge of the Subdivision Map Act and other federal and state laws and standards that regulate the land surveying profession.

Examples of Duties: 

  • Acts as party chief for a field survey crew engaged in making plane and/or geodetic surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects; participates in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers, resident engineers, and contractor representatives; assigns and monitors work, and provides input for evaluation of members of field survey crew; and instructs and trains survey crew in survey methods, use of equipment, and field safety procedures.

To perform the essential functions of the job, incumbents may be required to perform moderately strenuous tasks, such as including lifting and carrying instruments weighing up to 75 pounds over rough terrain. Position Summary:
This person is responsible for the production of maps and drawings. The major objectives are the quality (accuracy, thoroughness, clarity) of work, meeting schedules, within budgets, and responsive service to client. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:  3 to 5 years

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:  Two-year Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology or AutoCAD drafting.  3-5 years’ land development work, water and sewer experience preferred, entry level considered.  

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience with AutoCAD, CAD standards and Excel.

Responsible charge of all aspects of a surveying and geomatics group (field and office) consisting of several field crews and supporting technical staff involved with public and private sector land improvement projects. Initiate and maintain contact with key personnel and officials of organizations and companies. Plan, organize and supervise survey crews, technicians and other staff members. Administer contracts and manage projects, interpret, organize, execute and coordinate assignments. Schedule and assign work to meet completion date. Plan and develop surveying projects with unique or controversial problems, explore subject area, investigate and develop novel concepts and approaches.

Requirements:
Licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor in Tennessee required.  5+ years of progressive experience in surveying management in residential/commercial development preferred. Candidate will be expected to possess strong self-motivational and organizational skills, experience with survey computations and platting using Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and ArcGIS as well as field experience with Trimble Survey field equipment. Computer skills involve survey data management using Trimble or Android devices. Experience with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Google Earth and IT a plus. Thorough working knowledge of GPS required.  Must pass a drug screen, background check, and have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the company's driving (MVR) policy.

Responsibilities:

  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Operate and manage data collection using Mobile LiDAR and static scanning
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise field crews during various conventional, robotic and GPS land surveying projects
  • Ability to travel out of town on assignments

Qualifications: 

  • 5+ years of experience in land surveying required (preferably in laser scanning)
  • Associate’s degree in surveying/geomatics, civil engineering or related field preferred
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, navigational programs, CADD programs, Trimble Business Center, Leica Cyclone, PosPac, TerraScan, and Trimble Trident preferred
  • Experience with Trimble data collection, GPS receivers and robotic total stations considered a plus
  • DOT and route survey experience considered a plus
