Intro. to Easements by Dr. Jerry Nave
This seminar will provide an overview of the different types of easements and the methods used to create them, with a focus on how they impact land surveyors and their work, as well as the role surveyors play in identifying and documenting easements. 

Client Communications - The Lifeblood of Business by Bill Beardslee
From the initial pre-proposal meeting to as-built completion, no technical skill or knowledge is as important to sustaining business as the communication between the professional and the client.

History of County Boundaries - Steve Amos
Steve will explore the formation and evolution of North Carolina counties. Participants will learn about the historical events, geographic factors, and legal changes that have shaped county borders over time. 

NC Geodetic Updates - Gary Thompson
Gary will share updates on the issues that may impact surveying professionals in North Carolina.

Instructors:

Dr. Jerry Nave, PLS - Jerry is a professor of Geomatics at NC A&T State University where he teaches courses in boundary location and legal principles, land systems, geodetic surveying, satellite positioning, ethics and professionalism and subdivision design. He earned his BS and MS in Surveying and Mapping and his doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at East Tennessee State University. He received his PLS in 1993 and has over 21 years of experience in the private and public sectors. 

William E. Beardslee, PE, PLS, PP is a licensed Professional Land Surveyor, Engineer, and Planner with over 45 years of experience in the field of land development.  He is known for his excellent presentation and writing capabilities, along with being one of the leading technical experts on land development in the engineering and surveying arena.  He has made over 2,000 presentations on engineering and surveying projects to local and state agencies.  Prior to his retirement, he was the owner and Director of Engineering for Beardslee Engineering Associates in Sparta, NJ.

Steve Amos,  PLS, CFS is a North Carolina Professional Land Surveyor with more than 25 years of comprehensive land surveying experience, including 15 years managing Geomatics operations on a number of significant surveying projects across the state. His experience extends to survey staff management, survey compliance programs, and survey quality control in both the private and public sector markets. His specialties include overseeing survey operations, including ALTA, boundary, topographic, route, as-built, and construction surveys throughout North Carolina. He is also experienced in SUE and UAV surveys. Steve is a licensed Remote Pilot – sUAS Airman with the Federal Aviation Administration and is a Certified Floodplain Surveyor. He has served on the Gaston County Park and Recreation Advisory Board for over a decade. Outside of work, Steve enjoys spending time with his family, serving his community with his church, and being a Kansas City Barbecue Society Certified Master Judge. He has participated in over 80 contests in 11 states.

Gary Thompson, PLS is the Deputy Risk Management Chief, North Carolina Emergency Management/Risk Management and Chief of the North Carolina Geodetic Survey/Risk Management/NC Emergency Management. He has held a professional license as a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) in North Carolina since 1980. He has served as president of both the North Carolina Society of Surveyors (NCSS) and the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS). Gary is an emeritus member of the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCBEES), and a commission member of the ABET Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission.
